Anyone care to update this one?
I waited yesterday morning, I was around #70 in line. But it was only 64GB Verizon left when it was my turn.

Perhaps the best approach would be to use the Tiger badge for now, and as the Guides evolve, to produce an icon for all iterants of OS X. The "TigerTip" could then expand to say "This article applies to [Tiger logo] [Leopard logo]" or "This article applies to [Panther]."

I have no idea how to even respond to that..
Clearly you do....you changed your thread title.:)
Imagine everyone who needed help just calling their threads "Please Help Me". In order to know what each thread was about, you would have to click on them.
If you name your thread something that has to do with your problem, then you are apt to get proper help. It's especially helpful in Forum Spy.

Disk Utility should be able to override any write-protection. Make sure you have the drive highlighted in the left column of disk-utility. (The actual drive, which is located above the volume.) Then select Partition, and select one partition (assuming you want a single partition) , name it, and click on Partition. See if this works.

Does your '08 MBP have switchable graphics? If so, are you sure that you're on the high-end graphics? My mid-'10 MBP doesn't have smooth Expos animations when on the integrated (inferior) graphics. Also, you should try the 2GB RAM (just for the sake of eliminating that variable; replacing the RAM would be the easiest solution if it were that).

After Applecare expired I blew a power supply in a G5 iMac and called Applecare and they shipped out a 'new' one for around 50 bucks and I swapped it myself. No big deal, it was rather easy actually. They gave me no grief and no hassle. Had the part within a few days and shipped the old one back, prepaid.
It worked, although not what you might have been asking for?
Yeah, actually it is the kind of answer I was looking for. For one, I didn't know that Apple would sell parts to the user, and two it wasn't the mega-expensive repair that advocates use as examples of why you should get AppleCare.

Well, if I'd been there I would have made a citizen's arrest, then shot them with my glock then sic'd my rottweiler on 'em....
.... oh, wait.... I'm Canadian.... I don't do those things. I would have cross-checked them into the boards, stuffed 'em with timmy's and held them for the the mounties by threatening to whack 'em upside the head with my hockey stick......
.... no, that's not what we do. I would have apologized for getting their way, and then said something passive/aggressive....
.... sorry for taking up your time for a silly post.....

Despite the fact that I shouldn't be spending money I don't have, I'd wanted a Mac for a long time, since working with them at Uni and, prior to that, at various workplaces including a stint on Work Experience at Your Sinclair.
Having owned PCs from an almost steam powered 8086 through to the last Dual Core 2 machine I have (and the last PC I may ever own), it was a big move to go back to Mac OS and learn it all over again.
But a refurbished Mac Mini (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) at 510 was a bargain and I had to have it, especially as it now means I can review Mac App Store games on my website.
The Mac Mini delivery was incredibly quick. Arriving on Tuesday morning after ordering late on Sunday, I barely had time to clean the study ready for the new machine.
Setting up was easy, plug in and go. Mac OSX greated me with a light and sound show. Ok, it was a slightly tinny sound as I hadn't set the sound to come out of the TV.
Moving across iTunes was far harder. Reformatting one 1TB Hard Drive to be used on the Mac then copying across 200GB of data from an NTFS drive to the new one. Some fiddling around later, much hunting for Artwork on albums, one iPhone synced to the new iTunes and I still have to sync my iPod Touch, losing all the game saves in the process. (it's ok, I really want to go through and 3 star EVERY SINGLE Angry Birds level all over again. Grrrr).
Now the learning curve begins.

Using an AEBS is way overkill for what you are asking to do. Just get a decent gigabit ethernet switch.
Yep. I have This (http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-Unmanaged-Auto-Negotiation-Auto-MDIX-TEG-S80G/dp/B001QUA6RA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304471134&sr=8-1) one to serve up the network connections for all my home theatre devices behind the TV. Quite fast, no setup, and saves power by scaling output according to cable length.

I don't know RipIt, but if it RipIt already transcodes, why do you transcode again?
Why not just use another ripper and then transcode via Handbrake?

Do they have a 68k client? I remember that distributed.net had one, and it was funny comparing an SE/30 to a (then top-of-the-line) 4-way 550 MHz Pentium III Xeon system at work.
And to think, the Mac Pro 3.0 GHz has five and a half times the processing power of that old system, for less than the cost of a SINGLE processor from that old system. (A 550 MHz/2MB cache Pentium III Xeon was $3,692 (http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/sp082399.htm) at intro, compared to an otherwise-stock Mac Pro 3.0 GHz at $3299.) The old server also only supported 4 GB of RAM, max. (In 16 PC-100 DIMM slots, each supporting a max 256 MB.) Compare that to the Xeon Xserve, which also has 16 DIMM slots, but supporting up to 4 GB in each slot, for a max of 32 GB of RAM.

Have you tried zapping the PRAM? Thats what I normally try when I have odd startup/reboot issues. I can recall that once fixing an issue I had with my Sawtooth. It would allow me to reboot but not shutdown. I would select shutdown in the Apple menu and just as it seemed like it was about to shutdown it would start the reboot process. I zapped the PRAM and all was well again.
